Lesson Description

RoboParade
RoboParade is an open-ended, cross-grade, team-based project that integrates mathematics, coding, and robotics for students in grades 3-12. Students prepare for the parade by applying mathematical reasoning to plan and calculate a parade route, which they then translate into code using their computers. In addition, students apply engineering design principles to build creative and thematic floats for their robots. Through iterative testing and refinement, students culminate their work in an engaging and celebratory RoboParade performance.

Through this collaborative project, students develop deep mathematical understanding alongside technical skills. For example, in a Grade 4 RoboParade implementation, students engage deeply with key fourth-grade mathematics standards while also strengthening skills in coding, robotics, engineering design, and teamwork. Mathematical concepts addressed may include:

  • Multiplication
  • Division
  • Fractions and decimals
  • Time (in seconds)
  • Perimeter and area
  • Lines and angles
  • Two-dimensional shapes
  • Measurement and unit conversions

RoboParade emphasizes mathematical thinking, adaptability, problem-solving, teamwork, collaboration, communication, social-emotional learning, and perseverance, while providing students with an authentic context for applying mathematics in a creative, real-world setting.

Note: If you would like to showcase your RoboParade videos on this page, please contact us to share your videos via a YouTube link or a downloadable video file. Please ensure that the parents or guardians of all students appearing in the videos have signed an appropriate media release form. Creating a RoboParade video can also serve as a meaningful culminating project for students enrolled in journalism, media, or digital storytelling courses.
